So recently you may have noticed that things have been quiet on the old blog. I’ve been busy, to say the least; secured a new job, been skateboarding as much as possible (even though last week most of the skate sessions were complete and utter anti-climaxes), as well as trying to fix camera equipment and my dying computer. Therefore it’s about time that I get you up to speed on what’s been happening!
Andrew Scott’s Hibernate Skate kicks off on the 1st of November. Terribleco officially have a team. If you don’t know what Hibernate Skate is, then what the hell have you been doing for the last month?? If you’ve ever seen Thrasher’s King Of The Road, or Sidewalk’s Big Push, then you can piece together a general idea of how it works. The only difference is that the competition has originated and mainly features Cov skaters (even though there is a team from Tamworth competing as well) – a fair few of the challenges are Coventry based, however there are quite a few that require visits to other parks as far as Hereford and even Saffron Walden. It’s a competition designed to keep the West Midlands scene active and creative during the winter, with a comprehensive list of challenges (which are yet to be revealed), and a £10 entry fee per team, which goes towards a cash prize for the winners. Terribleco’s team probably has the highest number of Sidewalk forum geeks, as well as a few Terribleco OG gangsters; Rosko, Ralph Cooper, Chris Mander, Emily Martin, Joxa, Mofugga and myself. Emily suggested that we should get an extra 100 points for having a girl on the team. There’s also a rag tag bunch of devil spawn young’uns lead by Harry and Tony called “Team Rad”. They genuinely think they’re gonna win; we’ve got the dude who can do triple kickflips and the guy who rock fakied a bank to wall. Rad times. The games begin on November the 1st, you can still enter if you get in touch with Andy and slip him a tenner.
Other than that, the campaign to get a better skatepark in Coventry has picked up thanks to the involvement of local BMXers Dave Birkin and Jack Hollingsworth. Those bike-riding gents and myself have set up a small committee to come up with ideas for raising funds for what could be Coventry’s showpiece skatepark, as well as a consultation group to get your thoughts and ideas posted so that everyone is happy. At the minute we’re trying to follow the idea of getting Covpark extended or replaced – but this all depends on what the state of play is with cash and whether we can secure a substantial amount of space for an extension. Fund raising ideas have been coming in thick and fast, including Chris Mander putting himself forward to run 4 marathons and 2 half marathons to get some cash for us to start our own charity. Once our charity is established, we want to use it as a means to get other skateparks in Coventry extended, as well as work on other projects such as dirt jumps for BMXers and mountain bikers, parkour areas and other improvements for skateparks like flood lights and CCTV. This comes from an understanding that we can’t just set up a charity, get an extension of Covpark and then leave it; a charity has to continue to do good work once it has reached it’s first goal. This way we’re hoping working with the council and providing better facilities for skateboarding in Coventry will improve tenfold. And finally, on the video front; I’ve decided to put together a special edition version of Cthulhu. There will be 10 copies, and they will sell at a fiver, with stickers, a booklet, and more extras on the disc. We’re currently filming little bits and pieces to put on the disc to entertain you. Look out for more news soon. The last piece of news is that work on my 10th full skate video has officially begun. This means we started filming some stuff over the last week. Some of this may go towards extra material for the special edition of Cthulhu, however I’m hoping I can save a fair bit for the tenth video. I have no idea what I’m calling the new film yet, and a trailer will probably not appear for quite some time. The difference with this next film is that I’m trying to take my time with it, and I’m not really rushing into anything – especially with producing an edit for Hibernate Skate!
For those of you who check regularly, I’ll try and keep updating the blog more often!
